In July 2024, new regulations concerning the separate collection of bio waste came into effect and was thus transferred to municipally organized waste transport.
The separate collection of bio waste became mandatory for housing companies with five or more dwellings located in urban areas within Botniarosk Ltd’s operating area in July 2022. Until then, the emptying of the bio waste bins had been carried out by local waste transport companies. On July 19, 2024, the emptying of bio waste bins was transferred to municipally organized waste transport.
The bio waste collection under Botniarosk Ltd’s responsibility began on July 19, 2024, using a transport company approved by Botniarosk Ltd and the existing bio waste bins located on the properties. The previously agreed emptying intervals with the waste transport companies remain unchanged.
Bio waste is sorted separately in apartment buildings or terraced houses with five or more dwellings. For example, if a housing company consists of three buildings on the same property, with three dwellings in each building, and the buildings use the same collection bins, the total number of dwellings is at least five and they are therefore jointly covered by bio waste collection. Separate collection of bio waste does not apply, for example, to a terraced house where each dwelling has its own waste bin.
The number of biowaste bins and the emptying intervals have been estimated as follows:
If a housing company composts its bio waste, it may apply for an exemption from the obligation for separate bio waste collection from the Waste Management Board (phone number: +35840 647 2312, e-mail: jatelautakunta@teuva.fi).
Bio waste paper bags are available for purchase in, for example, ordinary grocery stores. In addition to paper bags, bio-plastic (bio-starch) bags may also be used (not ordinary plastic bags!), or you can make your own biowaste bags out of newspaper.
The South Ostrobothnia Waste Management Board has set the emptying fees for biowaste per waste bin. The emptying fee consists of a transport fee and a treatment fee.
The fee is invoiced per emptying as follows: Waste bin emptying fees.
In July 2024, everyone living in an urban area with more than 10,000 inhabitants, regardless of type of housing, became obliged to join the separate collection of bio waste. There are no urban areas with more than 10,000 inhabitants within Botniarosk’s operating area, so the obligation to join the separate collection of bio waste will continue to apply only to housing companies in urban areas with five or more dwellings.
